Mystery Booster Commander Legality Dates: Commander, Eternal Formats and Limited-Only Cards
The complete Mystery Booster Commander legality timeline: new cards hit Commander on November 13, 2026 and eternal formats on January 1, 2027, reprints keep their legality, and playtest and acorn cards never leave MBC Limited.
Legality is the part of Mystery Booster Commander Edition that runs on a clock, and the clock has three separate dials. The 60 new cards become Commander-legal on one date, eternal-legal on another, and never touch Standard, Pioneer or Modern at all. The 2,000-plus reprints carry their own pre-existing legality with them. And the 121 playtest cards plus the 10 acorn-stamped Alchemy cards are wired to a single format — MBC Limited — forever. This page tracks all three dials, exactly as published in the official release notes. Every rule change that got us here is summarized on the game changes overview. Last verified on October 20, 2026.

November 13, 2026: New Cards Enter Commander
The release notes pin the first date precisely: the 59 new cards plus the one original digital-exclusive card — collector numbers 1 through 60 — are Commander-legal beginning November 13, 2026, the first day of MagicCon Atlanta. That is not a coincidence of scheduling; it is the format's launch event, and it means the first tables where the cards are playable in Commander games are the same tables where MBC itself is being drafted.
The group includes the seven announced Rulebreaker commanders. Their construction-bending text is live from day one, which is why the constructed-Commander conversation about them starts immediately — see the Rulebreaker commanders list for what each one changes.
January 1, 2027: The Eternal Formats Open
Six weeks later, the same 60 cards become legal in Legacy, Vintage and the other permanent formats on January 1, 2027. Standard, Pioneer and Modern are explicitly excluded — the new cards are a Commander-and-eternal release, not a rotating-format injection.
The stagger matters for planning. Between November 13 and December 31, the new cards exist only in Commander (and MBC Limited itself). If a card in the set is aimed at Legacy — and a 2,000-card retrospective pool is exactly the kind of environment where eternal-relevant tools show up — the first legal window opens with the new year, not with the product.
Reprints: Legality Travels With the Card
Everything else in the packs is a reprint, and reprints do not get new legality. A card that was Commander-legal before MBC is Commander-legal in MBC; a card that is banned or restricted somewhere stays banned or restricted there; a card that was never Modern-legal does not become Modern-legal because it was printed in 2026. The What's Inside breakdown frames the 2,000-plus card pool as a tour of Magic's history — which is precisely why each card's legality has to be checked card by card, against its own record, not against this product.
The one group worth calling out separately is the 134 futurist-frame reprints that appear in the slot-end position. They are reprints in a special frame, not new cards, so the same rule holds: their legality is whatever the underlying card already has.
Playtest Cards: One Format, Permanently
Every MBC pack contains one playtest card, always nonfoil, drawn from the 121-card playtest sheet shared with Mystery Booster 2. The release notes are unambiguous about their scope: playtest cards are legal only in Mystery Booster Commander Limited, and they will never be legal in any Constructed format.
That makes them the inverse of the rest of the box. New cards graduate outward over time; reprints already live everywhere they ever will; playtest cards are fenced into the format they were made for. Draft them, cast them, enjoy them — and do not build any expectation of playing them anywhere else. How they play at the table, and the conjure rules that several of them lean on, are covered in playtest cards and conjure rules.
Acorn-Stamped Cards: Arena Mechanics, Paper Rules
Collector numbers 61 through 70 are 10 Alchemy cards, stamped with the acorn and bringing mechanics designed for Alchemy on MTG Arena onto paper for the first time. Their legality matches the playtest cards: MBC Limited only, never Constructed.
The acorn stamp is the visual cue. In the slot-end odds table it is also the rarest outcome — a foil acorn-stamped card appears in under 1% of slot-end slots — so outside of Limited play these cards exist as collectibles of a digital-mechanics experiment, not as format staples. The full odds table is in What's Inside Mystery Booster Commander Edition.
What This Means in Practice
Three takeaways for deckbuilders and event-goers:
- Draft weekend is also constructed-debut weekend. From November 13, 2026, your MBC pulls can go straight into Commander decks, Rulebreakers included.
- Nothing in this box is a Standard rotation play. The product's constructed relevance is Commander now and eternal formats from January 1, 2027 — full stop.
- Check reprints individually. The pool spans Magic's history, so legality for any given card is its own, not the box's.
The event calendar where all of this unfolds — MagicCon Atlanta, Detroit, Tokyo, Las Vegas and Amsterdam, plus the Festival in a Box home version — is laid out in the beginner's guide, and how the community is digesting the new cards is tracked on the reactions and updates page.
